Well written Mike, thanks for sharing. A common point of struggle for many. I know you know this, but do keep in mind that our call is not to do everything, or something for that matter, our call is to respond the nudges of the Almighty God when / where / how He calls us to engage because He will draw us where we need to be. It takes the pressure off of us to have to do and be everything to all ppl but instead to be where he calls us and to do what he calls us to do. It seems like when we do that he multiples our wee efforts. Where I struggle and the questions I have to ask myself is … Am I tuning in regularly to what God has to say? Am I a willing follower? Do I have the courage to obey? If I follow Christ first and i choose to obey (in the big and the small ways) I will be exactly where he wants me to be. At least that’s what I’m counting on! 🙂 Oh, btw looks like someone in the crew needs a suitcase!
Why I follow you Mike. I know your journey and wonder often what you wonder about and how you make these pieces fit. I find comfort and guidance in helping the person nearest to me, wherever I am. My sister is in Sierra Leone for 3 years as a missionary and sends daily pics and reports home via technology… extreme contrast..extreme futility, extreme joy. God, and we, are in all of it, every moment. Blessings on your journey. Thanks for writing it out.

I just stumbled across your website. I appreciate your story about the pile up. I’m going through health issues with my wife. Many friends (known and unknown) on my Facebook have offered encouragement – prayers – good thoughts and the like. Makes a huge difference. I now look at others expressing their own hopes, dreams and tragedies with a lot more empathy. 2,000 years ago Jesus said, “Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you.” Love everyone. Take care of others. It’s huge.
My new favorite song! I enjoyed reading about your folks leaving Detroit and the other background to this song. I am so glad that two years ago I did what your folks did, and now my three boys can enjoy this beautiful part of the nation. I heard you the other day for the first time while visiting Montana. You and a bass player were outside on a deck, and my car pulled up. We wanted to stay and listen because it sounded great. But we couldn’t. I just ran up and got an autographed copy of Tumbleweed.

In 1970, when I was 12, my dad had a temporary job in Whitefish. We packed up and moved to the shores of Whitefish Lake in the middle of August and stayed until the first of December. I was pretty upset leaving my friends in Portland, Oregon and knowing I’d be going to school in a strange town. That all changed after I got there. We cried halfway back to Oregon when it was time to leave. I ended up living in Oregon and Washington, but Montana was still deep in my heart. For years I wanted to return and finally did in 2007 with a new man in my life. I rekindled my love affair with Montana and he fell in love with her too. We came back the next year, and the year after that we were married in Glacier National Park on the shores of Lake MacDonald. I’m retired now, but my husband’s job keeps us in Washington for the time being. We’ve built a log cabin near Whitefish, and I’m able to spend more time there now, and soon we hope to be there permanently. Whenever I leave Montana, my heart stays behind. Your beautiful song gave my feelings words.

Mike.. Like yr parents I moved to Montana in the 70s… I built my life here.. Had and raised my children here. My 30 yr old son just passed away.. We spread his ashes in the mountains and played “Bury me in Montana,”…. Thank you for that song! Myself and his brother and sisters will have that song in our Hearts forevermore!
